Dear ASAP Member,
We remind you that your letters to envcomp-AST at nsf.gov are now
urgently needed if you have not already written.
Your letter must be received by TOMORROW, June 23, 2016.
We attach a file of sample letters below which you can easily modify with
your own ideas and experiences.
The NSF AST must evaluate the environmental consequences of any major
change they make to the Arecibo Observatory according to a formal process
that results in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This process does not
consider the Observatory's science directly.
Please indicate your preference for Action #1 along with your other comments
drawing on material from the sample letters—
• #1 Continued NSF investment for science-focused operations (No- Action Alternative)
• #2 Collaboration with interested parties for continued science-focused operations
• #3 Collaboration with interested parties for transition to education-focused operations
• #4 Mothballing of facilities (suspension of operations in a manner such that operations could resume efficiently at some future date)
• #5 Deconstruction and site restoration
Thank you very sincerely for your ASAP membership and for your efforts on
behalf of the Arecibo Observatory,
The ASAP Board
