Dear ASAP member,

If you are a member of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and are interested in visiting Congress this Spring to advocate for Science and the Arecibo Observatory, then we urge to apply to the AAS Congressional Visits Day (CVD).

As described in the AAS website:

"The AAS CVD is an opportunity for AAS members to learn more about the federal government and policy making process, as well as how to best influence policy makers. This is also an important time for Congresspeople to hear from their constituents on what issues matter most to them and to ask for federal support and funding.”

Note, the deadline to apply is tomorrow Friday March 3, 2023 at 11:59pm EST.

In 2021 a couple of ASAP members participated in this program and took the opportunity to advocate for the Arecibo Observatory (and funding for science when they met with representatives). That year the CVD was online, this year it will be in person. The AAS does not dictate what the AAS members discuss with their representatives during the CVD, and members are free to advocate for the science they feel more passionate about. This is a great opportunity to advocate for the Arecibo Observatory and visit DC (with all expenses paid by the AAS).

Eligibility:

* You must be an AAS member.

* You must be eligible to vote in the United States.

* The AAS will cover most travel expenses for volunteers selected to participate, as our budget allows.

* Submitting the form does not guarantee you a slot in this year's CVD. Selected volunteers will be notified by early March.

What to Expect

* Learn how to contact and schedule a meeting with your legislators.

* How to craft a message that will have an impact on policy makers.

* Understand the federal policy landscape and how you fit into it.

* How to help others who want to be an advocate for science and astronomy.
