Dear Friends,

Since the closure of the Observatory, Arecibo's then-scientific staff,
plus some associated scientists in PR & FL, have been meeting over ZOOM
once a month to maintain regular scientific contact. At our last meeting,
(the past Monday), astronomers present took a decision to submit multiple
grant proposals to the NSF's Astronomy Division's AAG deadline of Nov
15th, each requesting use of the 12-m telescope. We felt that if there
were to be a number of proposals asking to use the 12-m, each including
a fraction of the operating costs for the telescope, then it might just
be possible to have the 12-m back in operation again.

To this end, we were wondering if you might like to join this effort by
either including the 12-m in any proposal you are working on, writing a
proposal to use the 12-m on its own, or even joining the proposals
that some of us are working on. The more proposals we, the astronomy
community, submit, the more likely it is that the 12-m telescope will
start operating again. Since the computers controlling the telescope and
the data-taking hardware are all part of the old AO computing system,
an added benefit would be the possibility of opening access to those
computing facilities again which might be valuable for you and your
students.

The technical specifications for the 12-m via Phil Perillat's webpages
are now available at;

https://naic.nrao.edu/arecibo/phil/hardware/12meter/patriot12meter.html,
and we also have the 12-m Telescope User Guide prepared by Dr. P.K.
Manoharan that can be sent to interested parties.

We know that the deadline is coming soon. However, if you are
interested, may we request you to contact us very soon to coordinate
our efforts, and also join a ZOOM meeting scheduled for the coming
Monday, Oct. 23rd, 3 - 4 PM ET/AST.

We take this opportunity to remind you to also join the general ASAP
meeting on Thursday, 10/26.

Many thanks and with all best wishes,
