Dear ASAP members,

Nominations and candidacy statements are still coming in and more are
needed, so the deadline for them has been extended by a week to 2024
April 30 (and voting will be similarly delayed). Please send in your

Dear ASAP Members,

We are excited to inform you that the ASAP Board election will take
place this month. All ASAP members who have paid the membership fee by
April 23rd may stand for election and vote in the election.

The membership fee has a pay-what-you-will model so that although we
recommend membership payments of $50 (USD), the minimum fee to grant
eligibility as a voting member is $15. Your membership payment is
crucial to allow ASAP to advocate more effectively for returning to
Puerto Rico the capabilities lost with the collapse of the William E.
Gordon telescope as well as for making the remaining instruments and the
archived data available to the scientific community. You can pay your
membership fee through this form: https://forms.gle/bHVaVSXvJ1yQATh27

If you are interested in standing for election for the ASAP Board,
please reach out to secretary at areciboscience.org by April 23rd, 2024,
express which role(s) you are interested in (see below), and provide a
brief introduction of yourself to inform the voters of who you are. The
voting will take place through an online form on April 26-30, 2024. Any
roles with no candidates in this election will be elected once
candidates are found.

The only requirement for a Board member is that they have paid the
membership fee. For a Treasurer, Government Advocacy Officer, and the
Liaison and Legacy Officer also prior knowledge of relevant tasks is a
benefit. The roles to be filled, according to the new bylaws, are:

· Chair, who convenes and facilitates the Board meetings and all-member
meetings, sets agendas and sends them 24 hours in advance to all Board
members,

· Secretary, who is responsible for maintaining the membership email
list, taking notes during the Board meetings, providing email minutes to
all board members within 48 hours of the meeting, indicating decisions
and actions made or to be made, and coordinating the Board elections,

· Treasurer, who is responsible for the organization’s budget,
fundraising, reimbursements, and, if viable, coordinating travel support
and research awards for students,

· Education and Public Outreach (EPO) officer, who maintains ASAP’s
website and social media accounts, coordinates newsletter preparation,
and acts as a point of communication to other scientific EPO
organizations,

· Government Advocacy officer, who maintains relations to the
government entities (US Senate and House of representatives, NSF, and
other government agencies as needed) and leads and coordinates
government advocacy efforts,

· Arecibo Liaison and Legacy officer, who maintains knowledge of the
remaining scientific instrumentation, current operations at the site,
maintains relations with the site operators as a point of communication,
and, together with the EPO officer, prepares materials on the historical
legacy of Arecibo that can be used for outreach and advocacy, and

· Three at-large members, consisting of one representative from each of
the three scientific disciplines, which have primary long-term interest
in Arecibo scientific operations, (i.e. atmospheric and geospace
sciences, planetary science, and radio astronomy), who act as bridges
between ASAP and their respective scientific communities.

If you would like to actively contribute but cannot commit to a role in
the Board, a number of committees to support the Board in their
respective roles will be organized after the new Board begins their
term, so please consider joining one of the committees after the
election.

Best regards,

ASAP Secretary
